It was then that Dr. Carter G. Woodsen, the founder of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asalh.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Association for the Study of African American Life and History<\/a>&nbsp;dubbed the second week of February &#8220;Black History Week.&#8221;&nbsp;He chose the second week of February to honor Abraham Lincoln\u2019s and Frederick Douglass\u2019 birthdays.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">With time, the week evolved to a month that includes a unique&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/asalh.org\/black-history-themes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">&nbsp;each year. U.S. presidents have recognized the month and theme since 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Black History Month\u2019s purpose is to recognize the achievements and contributions of Black Americans to the U.S. and its history and culture.<\/p>\n<p>The intent of the theme is to examine and recognize a different aspect of Black history each year. The theme for 2023 is \u201cBlack Resistance.\u201d It honors and explores Black Americans resistance to historic and ongoing oppression.<\/p>\n<h2>Black Deaf<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal;\">&nbsp;<\/span>History<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/hearing-loss#tab=tab_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20% of the world\u2019s population lives with hearing loss<\/a>. And just as there\u2019s a Deaf community and history, there\u2019s a Black Deaf community and history too. Deaf Americans and Black Americans have been marginalized and oppressed, and Black&nbsp;<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Deaf<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">people feel that even more so as members of two underrepresented communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Historically, Black Deaf students weren&#8217;t allowed to integrate with white Deaf students and white schools the U.S. That restriction led them to develop&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_American_Sign_Language\" target=\"_blank\">Black American Sign Language (BASL)<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">, a dialect of American Sign Language (ASL).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Recognizing Diversity and Inclusion for the Deaf and Black Deaf<span style=\"font-size: 2rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span>Communities<\/h2>\n<p>Sorenson as a company is committed to diversity and inclusion for the Black Deaf, Deaf, and other underrepresented communities and cultures. We&#8217;re committed to expanding services to these communities. We\u2019re also the largest private employer of sign language interpreters in the U.S. and made the<a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/press-releases\/sorenson-named-to-the-forbes-best-employers-for-diversity-2022-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;Forbes\u2019 list of Best Employers for Diversity 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As long as Sorenson has been providing language services, we\u2019ve worked closely with&nbsp;Gallaudet University&nbsp;\u2014 a private university for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Sorenson\u2019s first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/vrs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video relay service<\/a>&nbsp;call center to serve the Deaf was on the Gallaudet campus. And in June 2022, Sorenson and Gallaudet created a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/press-releases\/vrs\/gallaudet-center-for-black-deaf-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">strategic partnership<\/a>. For others, it&#8217;s a daily celebration of our lives, our children, our ancestors, and the Black heroes alive today, and their immeasurable contributions to America.\u00a0<\/p><p>It&#8217;s a time to respectfully salute, celebrate, and honor Black Americans who&#8217;ve led, taught, fought, and sacrificed to improve our country.\u00a0<\/p><p>It&#8217;s also a call for us to be a part of history by consciously re-evaluating our individual mindsets, socially engaging in respectful discussions, and organizing through action to contribute to our own legacy.\u00a0<\/p><p>We all need to join in the year-long journey to recognize the significant contributions Black Americans have made and continue to make\u2014to our society, history, culture, and future.\u00a0<\/p><p>It&#8217;s through our increased empathy, understanding, and open-mindedness within our inner circles that we can truly begin to honor Black History, and move our country forward together.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-56db513 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"56db513\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-7c4666f6\" data-id=\"7c4666f6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-68e4db25 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"68e4db25\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1.75rem;\">Pamela Smith, Video Interpreter<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Growing up, my mother told me stories about her grandfather,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainx.com\/news\/community-news\/021512up-from-slavery-isaac-dickson-asheville-pioneer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaac Dickson<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">. He had a very remarkable life as a freed slave and had a direct impact on the City of Asheville, North Carolina, after the Civil War.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">There&#8217;s a school named after him in Asheville.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">I always wanted to do a better job with the exact details of my heritage, but a parent from the school did the research in the archives and saved my family a lot of time and hard work.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">I have a photocopy of the \u201csafe passage\u201d artifact, which is a very treasured item.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">It was signed by leaders of Cleveland County, North Carolina, to give my great-grandfather safe passage to Morganton.<\/span><\/p><p>I\u2019m proud to have descended from such a wonderful legacy. I wondered where my \u201ctrailblazing\u201d character came from. I incorporate not only Hearing Blacks but anyone in the Deaf\/Deaf-Blind\/Interpreter Communities. I also honor those that created any type of movies related to our communities by watching them more at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up being an OH CODA (Only Hearing Child of Deaf Adults), I had to interpret a lot for my family.&nbsp; And I had not once seen a Black interpreter. At that point, I declared I would be the first Black Interpreter.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we know I wasn&#8217;t the first, but in my world I was. Not only did I become one of the first Black Certified interpreters in North Carolina but I assisted with setting up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbda.org\/local_chapters\/north-carolina-black-deaf-advocates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina Black Deaf Advocates Chapter #30<\/a>&nbsp;(NCBDA in 2005 and National Alliance of Black Interpreters of North Carolina in 2006). We look up different Black people who&#8217;ve impacted our lives in one way or another, outside of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and so many others. We research which\u00a0 local Blacks have made a difference here in the state of Maryland where we live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, Black History Month isn\u2019t just in February.
