Do you find yourself saying, \u201cI\u2019ve graduated. Now what?\u201d There are lots of \u201cnow what\u201d-s out there. Here are some ideas to assist you in finding job opportunities for Deaf people.<\/p><h3>University\/Community Career Centers<\/h3><p>Most universities, including Gallaudet<sup>(1)<\/sup> and NTID\/RIT<sup>(2)<\/sup>, have career centers with staff to answer all your career-related questions. These are places where you can ask about:<\/p><ul><li>where and how to look for jobs<\/li><li>how to write a resume<\/li><li>how to apply for jobs<\/li><li>mock interviews<\/li><li>internships<\/li><\/ul><p>Career center staff also hold job fairs several times a year for companies that are hiring to set up booths on campus. This is not only a good way to find out who is hiring in your field but also who is open to hiring Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Current students and recent graduates aren\u2019t the only people who can go to career centers. Alumni can also tap into this resource.<\/p><p>The federal government has the Department of Workforce Services, an agency that provides similar services. There are also agencies in some communities that provide similar assistance specifically to Deaf people, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/my-news\/building-equity-and-inclusion-in-oregon\/\">Bridges Oregon<\/a>\u00a0or the Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Utah. Talk to people in your community to find out if there is one in your area.<\/p><h2>Recruiting Websites<\/h2><p>There are many websites to help employers and employees find each other. You should look for a job board that displays national, state, and local listings and allows you to filter job opportunities by variables such as field, pay, hours, and benefits<sup>(3)<\/sup>.<\/p><p>Some websites are general, for jobs of all kinds such as:<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/\">Indeed<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/index.htm\">Glassdoor\u00a0<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>They have large populations with high traffic and have lots of listings, making them a great place to start your job search.<\/p><p>Other websites focus on particular fields\/types of work, or niches.<sup>(4)<\/sup> Some examples of niche sites are:<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.efinancialcareers.com\/\">eFinancial Careers<\/a> (Finance jobs)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/\">MediaBistro<\/a> (Media jobs)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dice.com\/\">Dice.com<\/a> \u00a0(Tech jobs).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/\">Flexjobs.com<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Don\u2019t see your field there? No problem. There are niche job sites for nearly every profession that you can find with a quick search online<sup>(4)(5)<\/sup>.<\/p><h2>Networking<\/h2><p>Ever heard the saying, \u201cIt\u2019s not what you know, it\u2019s who you know\u201d? Right now, someone you know is probably saying, \u201cUncle Bob told me his friend has a job opening at his company\u201d.<\/p><p>That\u2019s networking. Career centers, especially those at Deaf-centric universities like Gallaudet and RIT\/NTID, and your network are excellent ways for you to find companies who are open to hiring Deaf employees.<\/p><p>One other thing that is very helpful these days is now you can find out how a potential employer addresses diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). There are various third-party organizations that survey companies and their employees to see how they are doing with DEIA and then share those results with the public.<\/p><p>For example, Disability:IN is a nonprofit organization that measures a company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/disabilityin.org\/what-we-do\/disability-equality-index\/\">Disability Equality Index (DEI)<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/press-releases\/sorenson-earns-top-score-on-disability-equality-index-2023\/?\">the benchmark score a participating company such as Sorenson<\/a> has received.<\/p><p>These are usually voluntary on the company\u2019s part and participation can be a clue to see if the company takes DEIA seriously.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54654ef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"54654ef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"communication\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Communication Services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Workplace Success<\/h2><p>When preparing for your job search and looking for jobs as a Deaf or hard-of-hearing person, communication options will be important for you to know. Throughout your education, you have likely been accustomed to having in-person American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters, using FM systems (the speaker wearing a microphone and transmitter unit and the Deaf\/hard-of-hearing student using a receiver), or even CART captioning in the classroom.<\/p><p>Those are certainly still options in the workplace, but you have, and likely will need to use, other tools.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Communication Technologies<\/h2><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Communication technologies have changed a lot in the last 20 years. In the last decade alone:<\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>software options have exploded, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/blog\/vrs\/apps-for-deaf\/\">including apps for smartphones and computers you can use communicate for work<\/a><\/li><li>online conferencing platforms \u2014 such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, and Google Meet \u2014 have gone from obscure software to mainstays in the corporate world. Great! Now to prepare for the next step: interviewing. Did your palms just get sweaty at the thought? You\u2019re not the only one!<\/p><p>Interviewing makes many people nervous. If you\u2019re a recent graduate it\u2019s possible you\u2019ve never interviewed for a \u201cbig job\u201d before. If that\u2019s the case, take advantage of your career center \u2014 go ask them to do a mock interview with you. If you found the job through someone in your network, ask them what the company looks for when they interview. Here are some other tips for job interviews:<\/p><h3>Communication Needs<\/h3><p>Let your potential employer know of any communication needs you have, like an ASL interpreter or captioning. Worrying about how well you can communicate with them can be a huge source of nerves.<\/p><p>When should you tell a potential employer that you\u2019re Deaf? That is a huge question with many possible answers that we can\u2019t choose for you<sup>(7)<\/sup>.<\/p><p>Disclosing hearing loss is difficult for many Deaf and hard-of-hearing job applicants. They worry that companies will filter them out. That concern is, unfortunately, sometimes valid<sup>(8)<\/sup>.<\/p><p>My personal attitude is I\u2019d rather work for a company that knew up front of my communication needs from the moment I applied and was willing to work with me. But I can\u2019t decide this for you.<\/p><p>Letting the recruiter or hiring manager know of your needs at some point is necessary, however, if you want to have the best experience in the interview. If you express yourself best through American Sign Language (ASL), for example, having an ASL interpreter in the interview could make a big difference.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> You have the right<\/a> to have potential employers meet your communication needs, so confidently let them know of your needs.<\/p><p>Effective communication is more than just a one-size-fits-all approach. You do not communicate the same way someone else might. Also, not every situation is the same. You and the potential employer need to consider the nature, length, complexity, and context of the communication situation as well as your normal method(s) of communication<sup>(9)<\/sup>.<\/p><p>It will be helpful to prepare yourself with resources to suggest if the company is unsure of how to provide for those communication needs. <a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/si\/business\/\">For example, Sorenson Interpreting<\/a> works with businesses to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/es.sorenson.com\/blog\/si\/american-sign-language-interpreting-options\/\">a variety of interpreting options<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Research<\/h3><p>Hopefully you\u2019ve already learned about the company before you applied to see if it\u2019s a fit for you, but more research is good to have for an interview. Interviewers often ask what you know about their company and why you want to work for them to determine which candidates are sincerely interested in the position<sup>(9)<\/sup>.<\/p><p>Study the job listing and write down different skills and strengths you have related to the position<sup>(10)<\/sup>. Be aware that employers will likely ask you how you would perform specific tasks with your disability. <a href=\"#starting\">Be prepared with answers<\/a>. Don\u2019t rely on remembering everything off the top of your head; you might risk forgetting key points on the spot.<\/p><p>Are you unclear about anything in the job listing? Do you have questions about the company itself that aren\u2019t answered on their website or by other sources? Write down your questions and take opportunities to ask throughout the interview or at the end<sup>(10)<\/sup>.<\/p><h3>Appearance and Promptness<\/h3><p>A common phrase applies here: You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Whether you think it is fair or not, interviewers do pay attention to how you look and if you\u2019re on time. It may not be the key factor they look for, but if there are several equally qualified candidates, this could be the tiebreaker<sup>(11)<\/sup>.<\/p><p>When you feel good about how you look, you naturally show confidence and a positive attitude. You can find great tips on what to wear and not wear at websites such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dresstoachieve.com\/\">Dresstoachieve.com<\/a>.<\/p><p>Being on time is important as well. Showing up five to ten minutes early for an in-person interview is ideal. Make sure you know how to get to the interview location and how long it will take you.<\/p><p>For an online interview, entering the meeting five minutes early is sufficient. Make sure you have the correct software downloaded and installed well before the interview. You should also experiment with the software beforehand so you are familiar with the controls such as video\/audio. Decide where you will be during the interview and verify your background is clean. Here are some tips for the first day of a new job(13):<\/p><ul><li>Don\u2019t worry about \u201cproving yourself\u201d on the first day: be there to learn.<\/li><li>Choose your clothing wisely: wear something appropriate that you\u2019re comfortable wearing all day.<\/li><li>Plan your commute: you may not have driven to your interview during rush hour so it\u2019s a good idea to drive there before your first day as if you were driving to work to determine how long it will take.<\/li><li>Bring a notebook: you\u2019ll likely be taking a lot of notes.<\/li><li>Keep lunch plans open: your new boss or co-workers may want to treat you to lunch.<\/li><li>Observe your surroundings: notice the layout and where things are in relation to your work space such as the restroom and break room.<\/li><\/ul><p>That reference also has useful tips on the first week and the first few months.<\/p><h2>Setting up Communication Strategies<\/h2><p>You should have already shared your communication needs, if any, with your new employer during the interview or hire process, including for the first day. Remember that the first day will include meeting many new people as well as Human Resources meetings to fill out paperwork and other details involved with starting a new job.<\/p><p><strong>If you will be mobile and communicating a lot during the day \u2013 moving from office to office talking throughout the day\u2014 then an in-person interpreter may be your best solution.
